1. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking a major step in addressing the issue of textile waste in the city. According to Sandip Kadam, head of PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, textile waste poses a unique challenge to waste processing systems.
  2. Kadam explained that textile waste cannot be processed using standard dry waste methods, as it can clog feeder conveyors and disrupt operations. This has led to the need for a specialized unit to handle textile waste in an eco-friendly manner.
  3. The proposed unit will ensure that textile waste is processed without harming the environment, providing a sustainable solution to the growing textile waste problem in Pune. Kadam emphasized the importance of addressing the environmental impact of textile waste.
  4. The PMC is currently finalizing a location for the plant and is awaiting approval from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The project is estimated to cost between ₹3 to ₹4 crore and is expected to receive a tender later this month.
  5. This initiative is part of PMC’s broader efforts to improve waste management in Pune, especially as the city’s population increases and waste volumes rise. The new facility will play a crucial role in managing Pune’s textile waste burden and creating a more sustainable waste management system.
