- Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking a major step in addressing the issue of textile waste in the city. According to Sandip Kadam, head of PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, textile waste poses a unique challenge to waste processing systems.
- Kadam explained that textile waste cannot be processed using standard dry waste methods, as it can clog feeder conveyors and disrupt operations. This has led to the need for a specialized unit to handle textile waste in an eco-friendly manner.
- The proposed unit will ensure that textile waste is processed without harming the environment, providing a sustainable solution to the growing textile waste problem in Pune. Kadam emphasized the importance of addressing the environmental impact of textile waste.
- The PMC is currently finalizing a location for the plant and is awaiting approval from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The project is estimated to cost between ₹3 to ₹4 crore and is expected to receive a tender later this month.
- This initiative is part of PMC’s broader efforts to improve waste management in Pune, especially as the city’s population increases and waste volumes rise. The new facility will play a crucial role in managing Pune’s textile waste burden and creating a more sustainable waste management system.
