Ali Fazal, the talented actor known for his roles in popular series like ‘Mirzapur’ and the ‘Fukrey’ franchise, has taken a stand against the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. The reason? Their double standards in congratulating filmmaker Payal Kapadia for her recent win at the Cannes Film Festival.
Payal Kapadia’s film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ won the prestigious ‘Le Grand Prix’ award at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. While Payal’s Alma Mater, FTII, congratulated her and her team on their achievement, Ali Fazal was quick to express his disagreement.
In a tweet, Ali wrote, “Uhhh… please don’t. Just don’t.” This is not the first time FTII has faced backlash for their actions. Back in 2015, Payal and 34 other students were involved in a protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of FTII. The students argued that Chauhan lacked the credibility to lead such a prestigious institution due to his work in B-movies.
As a result of the protest, an FIR was filed against Payal and the other students for holding the FTII director captive in his office. Ali Fazal’s criticism of FTII’s actions serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up against unfair practices, even within the film industry.
