Hey Pune folks, did you know that the CCTV cameras installed all over the city are being monitored by the Pune Police Control Room, local police stations, and chowkis? Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently clarified this in a written response to the Legislative Assembly.
But here’s the catch – the police don’t have a separate network for fixing technical issues related to these cameras. The repair and maintenance of the CCTV cameras are managed by M/s Allied Digital Services Limited, who ensure quick fixes whenever there’s a problem.
Currently, Pune boasts a total of 6,492 CCTV cameras, with 5,151 spread across the city and 1,341 under the Pune City Police. These cameras are being closely monitored by the respective police departments.
MLA Siddharth Shirole raised concerns about this issue in the Assembly, prompting Fadnavis to provide more details. In 2015, the Pune City Police Commissionerate installed 1,341 CCTV cameras under Phase 1 of the project. Approval has also been granted for an additional 2,886 cameras under Phase 2, with installation still ongoing.
The maintenance of these cameras is covered by a six-year contract with M/s Allied Digital Services Limited. Interestingly, the CCTV systems operate through Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which serves as the Internet Service Provider for the network.
To add to the surveillance efforts, Pune Metro and Pune Smart City have also installed cameras as part of this initiative. Looks like the city is stepping up its security game!
