Hey there, Pune folks! Big news for all you Amul milk lovers out there – the prices are going up by Rs 2 per litre starting Monday. That means you’ll be shelling out a little more for your favorite Amul Gold, Amul Shakti, and Amul Fresh varieties, with a 3-4% increase in the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) says the price hike is necessary due to rising operational and production costs. They’ve been paying farmers more for their milk over the past year to cover these increased costs, with about 80 paise of every rupee going straight to the producers.
This is the first price increase in 15 months, following a Rs 3 per litre hike last year. Back then, Amul blamed a 20% increase in animal feed costs for the rise.
Amul operates through a three-tier cooperative model that ensures profits go back to the farmers. It starts with the Dairy Co-operative Societies, where village milk producers are members, and goes all the way up to the State Milk Federation, which manages the supply chain.
In Gujarat alone, over 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 milk cooperative societies are involved in milk production. The process starts bright and early at 5 a.m., with farmers bringing their milk to collection centers to be measured and recorded. Payments are made monthly, with all the details available on an app for the farmers.
And it’s not just about milk – the District Milk Union focuses on improving cattle productivity, offering training, subsidies for equipment purchases, and even a super specialty hospital for farmers.
So next time you pick up a carton of Amul milk, remember that a big chunk of that money is going straight back to the hardworking farmers who make it all possible. Cheers to cooperative models that support local economies!
