Disturbing reports have emerged from an animal welfare center in Pune, where animals were reportedly starved and burned alive. The Pune Animal Welfare Trust, which claims to rescue and care for animals, is facing scrutiny after a pet owner discovered his dog had gone missing and later found a burned dog near the facility.
After receiving vague responses from the shelter’s management, the pet owner filed a complaint with SAS India, a local animal welfare organization. Nitesh Khare, the Founder and President of SAS India, described the dire conditions at the shelter, with animals lacking proper care and living in unsanitary conditions.
Despite efforts to meet with the trust’s owner, Rohit Chaudhary, he did not show up for a scheduled meeting. The team eventually broke into the premises and found animals in distress, some tied up and starving, while others were left to die without medical assistance.
A group of animal welfare organizations and volunteers, including Paws Foundation and Make New Life, worked together to rescue around 15 dogs and 40 cats from the shelter. An FIR has been filed against Chaudhary and the organization, with investigations revealing that the organization was not officially registered.
The team also seized a donation book showing registrations for 300 animals, but only a fraction were rescued, raising concerns about the fate of the others. The case is currently under investigation, with efforts to locate Chaudhary ongoing.
Nitesh Khare and his team are urging the public to be cautious when choosing organizations to care for their pets, emphasizing the importance of due diligence. If anyone has information about Rohit Chaudhary’s whereabouts, they are encouraged to contact the police or the SAS team.
