The Southern Command: A Powerhouse for Defense Innovation
As the Army Day celebrations took place at the parade ground of the ‘Bombay Engineer Group,’ Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi highlighted Pune’s significant role in the defense sector. He described the city as a “powerhouse” for research, development, ammunition, and vehicle manufacturing.
The Southern Command, headquartered in Pune, covers 11 states and three Union Territories, making up 41% of India’s land area. General Dwivedi emphasized its importance in fostering joint military exercises with other nations and managing industries crucial for the defense sector.
India’s strides in self-reliance were showcased during the event, with 85% of the Indian Army’s capital expenditure now going toward indigenous products. General Dwivedi emphasized the importance of mental and industrial independence for a developed India through an Indian lens.
Looking ahead, plans are underway to expand the Army Day celebrations to cities like Guwahati, Jaipur, Bhopal, and Jabalpur. General Dwivedi also expressed intentions to include defense veterans and industries in future celebrations to strengthen connections and encourage greater participation in shaping India’s self-reliant defense future.
