Kothrud, a bustling constituency in Pune, is currently experiencing political turmoil within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections draw near. Minister of Higher & Technical Education Chandrakant Patil is facing challenges from within his own party, with former corporator Amol Balwadkar stepping up to challenge him for the Kothrud seat.

The situation has created tension for Minister Patil, who won the election in Kothrud in 2019 after being unexpectedly given the ticket. This move redirected other potential candidates, such as Dr. Medha Kulkarni, who was sent to the Rajya Sabha as an MP. With the recent appointment of Murlidhar Mohol as an MP and Union Minister of State, the nomination of Patil seemed inevitable until Balwadkar’s challenge emerged.

Adding to the complexity, Deepak Mankar, Pune City President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has also expressed interest in contesting the Kothrud Assembly seat. This development has made the election more challenging for Patil, with the possibility of Shiv Sena entering the race on behalf of the Mahavikas Aghadi.

As preparations from opposing alliances ramp up and demands for candidacy arise not only from outside but within his own party, tough times are ahead for Minister Patil. Balwadkar, in response to the situation, stated, “I have worked faithfully for the party for many years and am interested in contesting the Legislative Assembly elections from the Kothrud constituency. The BJP will definitely consider me for this opportunity.”

With the political landscape in Kothrud shifting rapidly, it remains to be seen how the upcoming elections will unfold and who will ultimately secure the coveted seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
