It was a day of triumph for Hemant Rasane as he emerged victorious in the Kasba Peth constituency, reclaiming the BJP stronghold after last year’s surprising loss in the by-elections. Rasane, who had previously been defeated by Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar, managed to secure a comfortable lead this time around.
With a lead of 11,732 votes as of 12:30 PM, Rasane’s victory was all but assured. The voter turnout of 58.76% among the 2.81 lakh registered voters in Kasba Peth also played a crucial role in determining the outcome of the election.
The constituency, traditionally a BJP stronghold, had seen a rare loss for the party in the last by-elections following the passing of former MLA Mukta Tilak. Dhangekar’s unexpected win had raised his profile significantly, leading to his nomination for the Pune Lok Sabha constituency where he was ultimately defeated by BJP’s Murlidhar Mohol.
In this election, Congress stuck with Dhangekar as their candidate, while the BJP re-nominated Rasane and the MNS fielded Ganesh Bhokare. Despite expectations of a tight three-way race, Rasane managed to secure a decisive victory, leaving Dhangekar in second place and Bhokare struggling to make a significant impact on the results.
