In a recent development in Mumbai/Pimpri Chinchwad, the Bombay High Court has intervened in a case involving unauthorized commercial activities in a local builder’s basement. Retired resident R. Chopra had filed multiple complaints regarding the illegal transformation of storage warehouses into bars, liquor stores, and a gambling den, prompting the court to take action.

Despite Chopra’s initial complaints in 2016 and a notice issued in 2017, no substantial measures were taken by the Dehu Road Cantonment Board or the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). During the hearings, PCMC claimed it lacked authority over construction breaches within the cantonment, while the Dehu Road Cantonment Board cited limitations in initiating criminal proceedings.

Advocate Nitin P. Deshpande, representing Chopra, argued that both entities had the power to seal the premises and stop the unlawful activities, challenging the legitimacy of the No Objection Certificates provided by the respondents. The Bombay High Court, led by Justices M.S. Sonak and Kamal Khata, ruled in favor of Chopra, ordering the immediate sealing of the premises and the commencement of criminal action against the respondents.

Additionally, PCMC was directed to conduct an inspection within 15 days and submit compliance reports within three months. The court imposed a hefty fine on the respondents and warned of further legal consequences for any future negligence by the authorities. Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing case.
