Farewell to a Literary Landmark: Pune’s Books Meridian Library Closes After 14 Years
After 14 years of being a beloved destination for book lovers in Pune, the Books Meridian Library has sadly closed its doors. With an impressive collection of over 18,000 books, the library played a significant role in promoting a love for reading and learning in the community. Its closure marks the end of a chapter in Pune’s literary scene.
Owner Dheeraj Kothari spoke to Pune Pulse about the challenges that led to the closure. In an era dominated by digitalization, he emphasized the importance of investing in a library subscription as a way to invest in oneself. Balancing the library with other business commitments became increasingly difficult, leading to the decision to close while it was still thriving.
Before bidding farewell, the library made a generous gesture to its loyal members by offering books at an 80% discount. Kothari urged patrons to continue supporting libraries by maintaining the quality of borrowed books, returning them on time, and becoming active members.
The library’s 14-year history was highlighted by its diverse collection and thousands of members who paid a monthly subscription fee of ₹400. Kothari fondly recalled the library as a place that catered to the needs of most readers, making it a memorable journey.
The closure of Books Meridian Library amidst Pune’s literary celebrations raises questions about the future of physical libraries in a digital age. As the city bids farewell to this literary landmark, it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving spaces that enrich communities and promote the joy of reading.
While the library may have closed its doors, its legacy of literary inspiration will live on, encouraging future generations to value the unique charm of libraries and the transformative power of books.
