As traffic and parking issues continue to plague Pune, residents are turning to cab services in droves. The number of daily cab riders has surged to 5 lakh in Pune and 1.5 lakh in Pimpri-Chinchwad, a significant increase from last year’s figures. With 18 cab companies now operating in the area, up from just two previously, the competition is fierce.

The affordability of cabs compared to autorickshaws is a major factor driving this shift. While autorickshaw fares are ₹17 per kilometer, cabs typically charge between ₹9 and ₹10 per kilometer, making them a more budget-friendly option for commuters. The convenience of booking and the availability of cabs have also played a role in their rising popularity, offering a stress-free way to navigate the city’s congested streets.

The growth of the cab industry has created job opportunities for drivers, drawing in workers from other regions. However, concerns about fare regulation linger. The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has established standard per-kilometer rates for cabs, but effective enforcement is crucial to ensure fair pricing for both drivers and passengers.
