The cabbage crisis in Pune’s Market Yard Wholesale Market has taken a toll on local farmers, as prices have plummeted due to a surplus in supply and a decline in demand. With cabbage pouring in from local districts, as well as from Gujarat and Karnataka, the wholesale prices have hit rock bottom at ₹5 to ₹6 per kilogram—well below production costs.

This sudden drop in prices has left farmers struggling to cover their expenses, as they are unable to break even with the current rates. Despite retail prices holding steady at ₹10 to ₹12 per kilogram, it is not enough to offset the losses incurred by the producers.

The oversupply of cabbage, coupled with the lack of demand, has created a challenging situation for both farmers and traders. Just two months ago, cabbage prices were at a high of ₹20 to ₹25 per kilogram, prompting farmers to ramp up production. However, the influx of cabbage from various sources has now flooded the market, leading to a 50% decrease in prices within a short span of ten days.

Traders are worried about the rising costs of cabbage coming in from other states and are hopeful that the supply will taper off in the upcoming weeks. As both farmers and wholesalers grapple with the imbalance between supply and demand, they are left to navigate the volatile market conditions in hopes of finding a solution to this cabbage crisis.
