The Neo Metro project, once hailed as a game-changer for urban transit in Pune, has been unceremoniously abandoned after facing rejection from the Central government. The project, which promised a modern trolley bus system with advanced features, has left the city without the revolutionary transportation solution it was hoping for.

Initially championed by the BJP-led state government under Devendra Fadnavis, the Neo Metro project aimed to introduce 25-meter-long electric buses with air conditioning and automatic door systems. However, the proposal was dealt a major blow when it was rejected on technical grounds, leading to its abandonment for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad as well.

Despite the initial excitement surrounding the project, there has been little progress over the past six years, with the proposed route on the HCMTR remaining a distant dream. The lack of follow-up and apparent apathy from authorities have prevented the Neo Metro from becoming a reality, with bureaucratic red tape and technical disagreements hindering its development.

Officials have expressed confusion over the rejection, with MoS for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol citing technical infeasibility as the reason for the project’s downfall. Srinivas Bonala, incharge of the HCMTR project, has stated that they are still awaiting official communication from the Centre or the PMC regarding the rejection.

With the Neo Metro project now a thing of the past, Pune residents are left wondering what the future holds for urban transit in the city. The ambitious vision for a modern transportation system may have been dashed, but the need for innovative solutions to ease congestion and improve connectivity remains a pressing concern for Pune’s growing population.
