Pune, 23rd December 2024: Good news for Punekars as the intense cold wave that had them shivering in their boots last week has finally started to ease up. The minimum temperatures are slowly beginning to rise, bringing some relief from the freezing conditions that had gripped the city and surrounding areas.

Last week, the residents of Pune experienced a sudden drop in temperatures as cold winds from the north swept through the region. The mercury plummeted to as low as 6°C at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and 7°C at Shivajinagar, making it one of the coldest spells of the winter season so far. The chilly weather made it feel like a winter wonderland during the day.

But fear not, Punekars, as the situation is looking up. Minimum temperatures have shown a noticeable increase, with readings of 19.2°C at Vadgaon Sheri, 19.1°C at Magarpatta, 18.5°C at Koregaon Park, and 18.3°C at Dapodi. Even Shivajinagar and the NDA saw temperatures rise to 15.5°C and 15.3°C respectively. On Sunday, dense fog blanketed parts of the city and its outskirts, adding to the wintry charm.

Senior Meteorologist Anupam Kashyapi explained that the temperature rise is due to a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, which has helped ease the cold conditions. However, Punekars should brace themselves for some light rain as a western disturbance is expected to bring showers from December 26 onwards. The weather is predicted to be partly cloudy from December 25, with the possibility of very light to light rain until December 28.

Kashyapi also warned that the cloudy weather might lead to lower daytime temperatures and strong winds could bring a chill reminiscent of hail. So, while Punekars may not need to bundle up as tightly as before, it’s still a good idea to keep those sweaters and umbrellas handy. Stay warm and dry, Pune!
