Residents of housing societies in Wakad, a bustling locality in Pimpri-Chinchwad, were taken by surprise recently when they received demand notices for pending non-agricultural (NA) taxes. This comes despite the Maharashtra government’s announcement in October 2024 that the tax would be abolished, a move that was welcomed by many as a much-needed relief.
Vishal Titre, a member of the Riddhi Siddhi Heights Society, shared his confusion upon receiving the notice. His society has been dutifully paying the NA tax each year, only to be caught off guard by the unexpected demand this time around. Similarly, Sushant Kulkarni of Alliance Nisarga White Lilly Housing Society expressed bewilderment at receiving a demand notice for the first time, despite the society’s existence for eight years.
An official from the district administration shed some light on the situation, explaining that while the decision to scrap the NA tax was made before the state assembly elections, the official government resolution has yet to be issued. Until formal guidelines are received instructing the authorities to cease collection of the tax, the standard procedure of issuing demand notices will continue.
As housing societies in Wakad await clarity on the implementation of the government’s decision and any potential action on pending payments, they find themselves in a state of uncertainty. Will the abolition of the NA tax be realized soon, or will they be required to settle their dues despite the announcement? Only time will tell as residents navigate this unexpected turn of events.
