Hey there, Pune residents! It’s time to pay attention to your water supply because health officials have confirmed that the recent Guillain-Barré Syndrome outbreak in the city was caused by the pesky Campylobacter jejuni bacteria. And guess how it got in? Through contaminated wells and other sources. Yikes!
Initially, authorities were scratching their heads trying to figure out what caused the outbreak, considering food contamination as a possible culprit. But recent findings have ruled that out, so it’s all about the water, folks.
Since the outbreak started in January, 166 people have been affected, with sadly five fatalities and 21 patients still on ventilator support. And the numbers keep climbing, with three new cases reported just on Tuesday. Scary stuff!
A senior health official spilled the beans, saying that out of 70 stool samples collected from patients, 27 tested positive for C. jejuni. It’s official, folks – the bacteria made its way into the drinking water supplies in the affected areas and caused all this chaos.
The authorities are now on high alert, working on improving water quality and sanitation measures to prevent more infections. And of course, they’re continuing to provide medical support to those affected.
So, Pune peeps, stay safe and watch out for any symptoms. And maybe invest in a good water filter while you’re at it!
