The Equal Water Supply Scheme in Pune, a project that has been plagued by delays, is still incomplete despite a deadline set two years ago. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is now asking for an extension of 2 to 2.5 years to finish the project, much to the frustration of residents who have been waiting for seven years.
In Kothrud, where the work has come to a standstill, local MLA Chandrakant Patil has expressed his disappointment with the slow progress. He has urged officials to speed up the project and take steps to prevent water leakage.
Even with prominent leaders like Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol and MP Medha Kulkarni residing in Kothrud, the lack of progress on the water supply scheme has raised concerns among residents. Many are still facing water shortages, delayed supply, and low water pressure in the area.
In response to the ongoing issues, Patil recently held a review meeting on the water supply situation with key officials from the Water Supply Department. The Equal Water Supply Scheme has identified 141 zones in Pune, with 17 allocated to Kothrud. New water channels are being laid and integrated into the existing distribution network, with 16 new water tanks completed so far.
However, work on the Ideal Colony tank is at a standstill due to a legal dispute between PMC and Law College. Patil has instructed officials to resolve the issue through dialogue to ensure the project is completed on time.
With Pune’s population growing and increasing the demand for water, authorities are looking into alternative sources to meet the city’s needs. Patil has mentioned the possibility of sourcing water from Mulshi Dam in addition to Khadakwasla Dam. A decision on this is expected soon.
