On August 11, 2024, Pune witnessed the grand inauguration of the ‘Dhara’ Tribal Museum on World Tribal Day. The museum, a joint venture by TERRE Policy Centre, Global Nature Fund (Germany), and the Gram Panchayat of Kodit, was a sight to behold with its vibrant display of tribal lifestyles, traditions, and cultural artifacts from various Indian states.

Notable figures such as former Pune Corporator Varsha Tapkir, Dr. Vinita Apte, founder of TERRE Policy Centre, and Bhaiyyasaheb Khaire, President of Shrinath Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, graced the event with their presence. The ceremony was a celebration of indigenous heritage and a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation.

The museum, adorned with bamboo decorations, showcased an array of exhibits including crops, flora, festivals, and ornaments, all capturing the essence of tribal life. In addition to the cultural displays, the project also included the planting of over 50,000 trees and the construction of a dam for water conservation.

Varsha Tapkir stressed the urgency of environmental conservation and commended TERRE Policy Centre for their tree plantation efforts. Dr. Vinita Apte highlighted the museum’s role in promoting biodiversity and sustainable development, emphasizing the need for community involvement in environmental initiatives.

Prasad Khaire praised the selfless efforts behind the museum’s establishment and tree plantation work, noting that 70% of the planted trees are fruit-bearing, benefiting both the environment and local economy. With a goal of reaching 100,000 trees, the project is a testament to the dedication towards environmental protection.

The event concluded with acknowledgments for Dr. Vinita Apte and Varsha Tapkir for their contributions, highlighting their commitment to environmental causes. The ‘Dhara’ Tribal Museum stands as a symbol of indigenous pride and a beacon of hope for future environmental conservation efforts in Pune.
