The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) member Dr. L.N. Danawade, who granted bail to the minor accused in the tragic Porsche incident in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar, is facing possible dismissal amidst the ongoing controversies. Dr. Danawade, along with K.T. Thorat, has been issued a show-cause notice by the Commissioner of the Women and Child Development Department (WCD). Questions have been raised as to why no action was taken against the judge for granting bail to the minor just 15 hours after the incident. However, it is anticipated that significant action will be taken against Dr. Danawade.
Prashant Nanaware, Commissioner of WCD, had previously issued show-cause notices to Danawade and Thorat. Despite Danawade submitting a response of over five pages, the WCD remains unsatisfied and may soon dismiss both officials. It has been reported that Danawade granted bail to the minor accused without consulting the second member, Thorat, leading to allegations of misconduct and non-compliance against both individuals.
The tragic incident occurred on 19th May when a minor, under the influence of alcohol and speeding in a Porsche, caused the deaths of two young IT engineers, Ashwini Koshta and Anish Awadhiya. The case gained national attention when the minor was granted bail within 15 hours by the JJB. The decision to grant bail included various conditions such as studying traffic rules, undergoing counselling, and staying away from negative influences.
The initial bail decision faced criticism for being perceived as lenient, resulting in the minor’s return to the Remand Home for Boys in Pune. Subsequent developments saw the arrest of the minor’s family members for tampering with evidence and coercing others to take the blame. Additionally, the Pune Police filed petitions to try the minor as an adult, with the Bombay High Court eventually granting bail on 25th June.
The case has sparked a debate on the juvenile justice system’s efficacy and appropriateness, highlighting the need for reforms and stricter regulations in similar cases. The ongoing developments continue to unfold as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and the subsequent actions taken by those involved.
