Are Stray Dogs Taking Over Pune? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’re a resident of Pune, you may have noticed an increase in the number of stray dogs roaming the streets. And it’s not just a harmless sight – over the past nine months, more than 18,000 citizens in Pune have suffered dog bites. This is a worrying trend, considering that only 14,073 incidents were reported during the same period last year.

On average, around 2,000 citizens are bitten by dogs each month, highlighting the urgent need for caution when walking around the city. Many residents are calling on the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take stricter measures to control the stray dog population and prevent further incidents.

The PMC’s health department claims to be actively vaccinating and sterilizing stray dogs to address the issue. In fact, between January and September 2024, they vaccinated and sterilized 4,500 to 5,000 dogs each month in an effort to prevent the spread of rabies and reduce the number of dog bite cases.

Dr. Nina Borade, Health Chief at PMC, reassured residents that the city’s dogs are registered online, and measures are in place to respond to complaints of stray dog bites. However, she emphasized the importance of timely preventive measures after a dog bite to reduce the risk of rabies.

As the number of stray dog incidents continues to rise, it’s crucial for pedestrians and residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid dog bites. The PMC’s efforts to address the issue are ongoing, but the community’s cooperation is essential in ensuring the safety of all Pune residents.
