Hey there, folks! If you’ve been wondering why your favorite drumsticks are suddenly costing you an arm and a leg, we’ve got the scoop for you. Rains in southern states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have thrown a wrench in the cultivation of shevga (drumsticks), causing a major shortage in Maharashtra.

Retail prices have shot up to Rs 500-600 per kg, making these once-affordable veggies a luxury item for many. Wholesale rates are even more jaw-dropping, with drumsticks now going for Rs 3,500-4,000 per 10 kg. Ouch!

The situation is hitting urban areas like Mumbai, Thane, and Pune the hardest. Experts are blaming the spike on unexpected rains that messed up the usual planting and harvesting schedules down south.

The good news is that the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Navi Mumbai is hopeful that prices will eventually come back down once new supplies start rolling in towards the end of December. Until then, it looks like we’ll have to tighten our belts and find some budget-friendly alternatives.

Even though drumsticks are a popular choice during the chilly months, many folks are opting for cheaper veggies and legumes instead. It’s all about staying warm without breaking the bank, right?

On a brighter note, some local varieties are still holding steady at Rs 120-150 per kg. So, if you’re lucky enough to snag some of those, count your blessings!

Stay tuned for more updates on the great drumstick drought of 2024. And remember, folks, always keep an eye on those prices before you hit the market!
