In a major win for technical education in Pune, engineering diploma admissions have surged this year with over 32,644 students signing up, surpassing last year’s figures. This increase comes after the Maharashtra government’s promise to provide free technical education for economically disadvantaged girls.
The state’s higher and technical education minister, Chandrakant Patil, announced in August that all fees would be waived for girls from households earning less than ₹8 lakh annually. This initiative has played a significant role in encouraging more female students to pursue technical courses.
With a total of 41,793 engineering diploma seats available across 120 educational institutions in the Pune division, the demand for such courses seems to be strong. The deputy directorate of technical education reported that 32,644 admissions have already been confirmed for the upcoming academic year.
Dattatray Jadhav, the joint director of the Pune DTE, expressed his excitement over the positive response to engineering diploma admissions. Many students, including one enrolled in a computer engineering course, have expressed their gratitude for the fee waiver, stating their aspirations to become successful engineers in the future. With a variety of courses available and support from the government, the future looks bright for students pursuing technical education in Maharashtra.
