EY, a global professional services firm, recently released a statement expressing their deep sadness over the tragic passing of Anna Sebastian. The company extended their heartfelt sympathies to her family and assured that they had provided all possible support to them during this difficult time. EY also hinted at future changes to improve workplace conditions, acknowledging the importance of addressing the family’s concerns.

In a deeply emotional letter to Rajiv Memani, head of EY India, Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, raised serious concerns about the company’s work culture. Augustine alleged that her daughter had been suffering from severe work-related stress due to an excessive workload and had complained of working late nights and weekends with little opportunity for rest. She called for meaningful steps to prioritize the health and wellness of employees at EY.

Before her passing, Anna had reportedly been experiencing symptoms of stress-related health issues, including chest constriction. A visit to a hospital in Pune revealed normal ECG results, with the cardiologist attributing her discomfort to a lack of sleep and poor eating habits. Despite being prescribed antacids for temporary relief, Anna tragically passed away on July 20, 2024.

In honor of Anna’s contributions and legacy, her LinkedIn account has been memorialized. Before joining EY, she had worked as an audit assistant at G Joseph & Associates for over two years and was a graduate of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) with more than three years of experience in taxation, statutory audits, and internal audits.

This tragic incident has shed light on the importance of addressing workplace stress and ensuring the well-being of employees across industries. It serves as a reminder for companies to prioritize the health and wellness of their workforce to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
