The first batch of 800 senior citizens from Pune embarked on a pilgrimage journey to Ayodhya as part of the Chief Minister’s Pilgrimage Scheme. The scheme, announced in June 2024, aims to provide economically weaker senior citizens the opportunity to visit holy sites across India. The special train was flagged off by Social Welfare Commissioner Vishal Londhe and IRCTC General Manager Gaurav Zaa. Pune District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar also attended the event virtually.
The Chief Minister announced the scheme to fulfill the dreams of senior citizens who wish to go on pilgrimages but are unable to do so due to financial constraints. The fully-sponsored pilgrimages include destinations for Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and Buddhist religions.
Future plans for the scheme include trips to Varanasi, Haridwar, and other holy sites across India. The state government aims to enhance the quality of life for Maharashtra’s elderly population through this initiative.
