Heavy rain, ongoing flyover construction, and potholed roads led to a massive traffic jam on Ganeshkhind Road in Pune today. The morning rain made driving hazardous, with potholes and open drainage covers creating dangerous conditions for motorists. This, coupled with the ongoing development works on the flyover and metro project, complicated traffic flow on the already congested road.
Drivers coming from Aundh and Baner towards Pune had to take alternative routes through VAMNICOM, Range Hills, and Agriculture College due to the construction work, adding to the traffic burden. The portal beam work for the flyover ramp at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk further narrowed the road, restricting vehicle movement and causing significant delays for commuters.
As the rain continued, more citizens opted for four-wheelers over two-wheelers, exacerbating the traffic congestion on Ganeshkhind Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Aundh Road, and Baner Road. Traffic on University Road also slowed down significantly, with vehicle queues stretching for kilometers.
One citizen expressed frustration, calling for a halt to development works during the monsoon to reduce inconvenience to commuters. Chaturshringi Traffic Branch Police Inspector Shafique Pathan explained that the portal beam work near the university was necessary but contributed to the traffic congestion. The situation improved after noon as the traffic cleared up.
The combination of ongoing construction, adverse weather conditions, and increased vehicular traffic has posed significant challenges for commuters in Pune. Better planning and coordination during peak traffic periods and adverse weather are needed to mitigate these challenges in the future.
