Hey Pune peeps, have you heard about the recent conversation around the Right to Information (RTI) Act? Former IAS officer Mahesh Zagade is not holding back in his criticism of the administrative system for not giving the Act the love and attention it deserves. At a recent event organized by Sajag Nagrik Manch, Zagade called out the lack of effort to strengthen the RTI Act, instead accusing the administrative machinery of actively trying to weaken it. Yikes!
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Lawyer Dr. Prahlad Kachare and Sajag Nagrik Manch President Vivek Velankar are on board with Zagade, emphasizing the importance of using technology to make the RTI framework more efficient. Dr. Kachare even highlighted the need for more public participation in democracy, stating that the RTI Act is key to empowering the people of India.
One major issue that came up is the sad state of the Information Commission in Maharashtra, with many commissioner positions lying vacant. Zagade is calling for experts in information rights to fill these roles and ensure transparency in the system. Dr. Kachare also pointed out the massive backlog of complaints and appeals nationwide, with Maharashtra leading the pack. This delay is not only frustrating for citizens seeking information but also weakens the effectiveness of the RTI Act.
Despite the challenges, the speakers at the event are calling for a united front to protect and strengthen the RTI Act. They’re urging citizens and elected representatives to join forces in a movement for transparency, accountability, and genuine public participation in governance. It’s time to stand up for our right to information, Pune!
