Former MP Raju Shetty, president of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, has dropped a bombshell allegation during a recent press conference in Pune. Shetty claims that there is a massive scam of over Rs 500 crore in the procurement of essential goods for prisoners in the state’s prisons. According to Shetty, the centralized tender process is rigged in favor of certain traders, resulting in inflated prices for basic items. For example, wheat that costs Rs 30-35 in the market is being purchased at Rs 45.90, rice worth Rs 35 is being bought at Rs 44.90, and tuar dal that should be Rs 100 per kilo is being snapped up at a whopping Rs 209.

Shetty has called for an investigation into the alleged scam and has named then Additional Director General of Police Amitabh Gupta and Inspector General of Police Jalindar Supekar as key figures to be scrutinized. He claims that this corruption has been ongoing since 2024 and involves top state officials. The state government, according to Shetty, is spending a significant amount of money on maintaining prisoners in jails, but they are being supplied with substandard and overpriced goods. Despite a report submitted by Jail Superintendent Harshad Ahirrao highlighting these issues, no action has been taken.

This is a developing story, and we are waiting to hear the responses of Amitabh Gupta and Jalinder Supekar. Stay tuned for updates.
