Applying for a driver’s license online has become a headache for many citizens, with former Transport Commissioner Mahesh Zagade criticizing the system for its complexity. Zagade believes the process may be intentionally difficult, pushing people to use agents for assistance.

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) offers online services through the Sarathi portal, managed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). However, the system has received backlash for being user-unfriendly, leading many to opt for agents who can navigate the process faster, albeit for a fee.

Zagade, who recently renewed his own license, expressed his frustration, calling for a simpler and more transparent process. He warned against using agents and urged for a return to the streamlined procedures he implemented during his time as Transport Commissioner.

Current Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar acknowledged the issues and assured that efforts are being made to improve the user experience. Bhimanwar mentioned that Zagade’s initiatives are being continued, with ongoing discussions with NIC for further enhancements. The RTO aims to make online services more user-friendly to reduce reliance on agents.
