Hey there, Pune residents! It’s time to talk about a serious health issue that’s been on the rise in our city – Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This rare autoimmune disorder is causing concern as the number of suspected cases continues to climb.

So, what exactly is GBS? It’s a condition where the immune system attacks the nerves, leading to muscle weakness and even paralysis in severe cases. Symptoms include weakness in the arms or legs, difficulty walking, and prolonged diarrhea. It can get pretty serious, with some patients needing ventilator support.

As of February 3, 2025, Pune has reported a total of 163 suspected GBS cases, with 5 suspected deaths. Out of these, 127 cases have been confirmed. Most cases are in PMC areas, with patients from various age groups affected.

The state health department has been quick to respond, sending rapid response teams to affected areas and increasing surveillance and health promotion efforts. Water samples have been tested for contamination, with 8 sources found to be contaminated.

To combat the spread of GBS, citizens are advised to boil drinking water, eat fresh and clean food, and report any symptoms to the nearest government hospital. Private medical practitioners have also been asked to notify authorities of any GBS cases they come across.

Surveillance and testing efforts are ongoing, with thousands of households surveyed and serum samples sent for testing. The state health department is ready to handle any further escalation and urges citizens not to panic.

Stay informed, stay safe, and let’s work together to tackle this health issue in our city. Stay healthy, Pune!
