The upcoming T20 International match between India and England in Pune’s Gahunje stadium is overshadowed by concerns over Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). With thousands of fans set to attend, the Maharashtra state government is taking precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of attendees. MCA Joint Secretary Santosh Bobde has announced that drinking water will be triple-filtered and only purified water will be used for various purposes to reduce the risk of GBS transmission.

Pune has seen a spike in GBS cases, with over a hundred reported infections. In response, a team from the central health ministry has arrived in the city. However, residents in the Nanded area were unhappy when the team left without conducting water testing, leading to calls for thorough inspections due to concerns about water contamination.

GBS is a rare neurological condition where the immune system attacks peripheral nerves, causing symptoms like weakness, tingling, and in severe cases, paralysis. Local health officials are ramping up monitoring and response efforts in light of the recent increase in GBS cases.
