Hey Pune folks, here’s a quick update on the recent Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in the city. Good news – the number of cases has started to decline as of March 16. Out of the total 230 cases diagnosed, 183 patients have already recovered and gone back home. That’s an impressive 80% recovery rate!

The outbreak initially hit Sinhagad Road area during the New Year week, with symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle weakness resembling paralysis in limbs. By the end of January, Pune had recorded around 130 cases, with new patients being admitted daily.

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department, along with state authorities, launched an investigation and found Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in some patient samples. Contaminated water sources, including a poorly disinfected well in Nanded, were identified as the source of the outbreak.

While the situation is improving, some patients are still in critical condition. Currently, 16 patients are on ventilator support, and 24 patients are in the ICU. Dr. Amit Dravid, a specialist at Noble Hospital, praised the preventive measures taken by PMC regarding water supply, reducing the chances of another outbreak.

In terms of stats, Pune city has 46 cases, newly included villages have 95 cases, Pimpri-Chinchwad has 34 cases, Pune Rural has 40 cases, and 15 cases are from other areas. Out of the total cases, 12 patients unfortunately succumbed to the illness.

It’s great to see the numbers going down and patients recovering, but let’s continue to stay vigilant and take care of our health. Stay safe, Pune!
