Hey Pune folks, here’s some good news for you! The Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak that had been causing concern in the Sinhagad Road area since January has officially come to an end. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department has confirmed that no new cases have been reported in the affected area since February 18, signaling the containment of the outbreak.
The outbreak, which was linked to norovirus and Campylobacter jejuni infections, saw the highest number of cases in Nandedgaon, Sinhagad Road. The health authorities follow a rule of considering an outbreak over when no new cases are reported for twice the incubation period of the disease, which in this case was 8 to 10 days for both norovirus and Campylobacter jejuni.
With 230 GBS cases reported across Maharashtra, Pune recorded the highest numbers, with 46 cases in the city limits alone. The outbreak also claimed a total of 12 lives, with most fatalities reported in Pune.
As of now, there are a total of 33 GBS patients currently admitted in hospitals, with 24 of them in the ICU and 16 on ventilator support. However, the good news is that 185 patients have already recovered from the disease.
The Pune health authorities are now awaiting approval from the Public Health Department to officially declare the end of the outbreak, bringing a much-needed relief to the city’s residents. Stay safe and stay healthy, Pune!
