1. Gokul, popularly known as the Kolhapur Jilha Dudh Utpadak Sangh, has announced a price hike of Rs 2 per litre for pouched cow milk in Mumbai and Pune. This decision comes as a response to the increasing costs associated with milk powder production.
  2. The chairman of Gokul, Arun Dongale, highlighted that the drop in milk powder prices due to oversupply has resulted in higher expenses for milk producers. In order to support these producers, Gokul has decided to adjust their prices accordingly.
  3. Following the price increase, a litre of Gokul’s pouched cow milk will now be priced at Rs 56 in both Mumbai and Pune. The dairy currently supplies 3 lakh litres of cow milk daily in Mumbai and 40,000 litres in Pune.
  4. The decision to raise prices was made after careful consideration by Gokul’s leadership, taking into account the uncertainties in the market caused by the government’s recent decision to allow imports of milk powder and butter.
  5. The directors of the cooperative have expressed concerns over the government’s import decision and have appealed for a reconsideration to prevent further destabilization of the market. Despite the state government’s subsidy of Rs 5 per litre to dairy farmers, the industry continues to face challenges.
  6. By increasing milk prices, Gokul aims to offset financial losses and ensure the cooperative’s sustainability in the face of challenging market conditions. The dairy remains optimistic about potential government intervention to safeguard local dairy farmers and maintain industry stability.
