Government hostels in Pune are considering implementing new regulations for online food delivery services to address safety concerns and prevent misuse. The decision comes after female students at a government hostel in Moshi were suspended for ordering pizza from outside.
Currently, hostels under the Social Welfare Department have no restrictions on ordering food from outside. However, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) hostels are now looking into creating guidelines to ensure security.
Prof. Varsha Wankhede, Hostel Head at SPPU, mentioned that discussions are ongoing to develop new rules in light of recent incidents. At present, girls can order food from outside, but late-night deliveries are monitored by security guards.
Prashant Jadhav, Joint Commissioner of the Social Welfare Department, emphasized that while there are no official rules against outside food, students are expected to follow guidelines for social responsibility. Bringing outside food is discouraged due to health concerns, but exceptions can be made with proper assurances.
Nitin Udas, Deputy Commissioner of the Social Welfare Department at PMC, outlined their hostel rules, including restrictions on absences between 10 PM and 6 AM and visitor limitations. Food deliveries are allowed until 11 PM, but students must collect orders at the entrance to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering late at night.
