Government institutions in Maharashtra, including the Pune Municipal Corporation and the General Administration Department, are facing a dilemma as they struggle to pay their electricity bills on time. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has reported that these institutions owe crores in unpaid dues, putting financial strain on the utility provider.

In the Pune Zone alone, over 4,600 government establishments have delayed their payments, resulting in a total arrear of Rs. 7.51 crore. This backlog of unpaid bills not only impacts MSEDCL’s financial stability but also affects the quality and reliability of services provided to consumers.

Various government departments, including Zilla Parishad, Education, Health, and Agriculture Ministries, along with police stations and Gram Panchayats, are among the defaulters. While it is common for these institutions to clear their bills by the end of the financial year, the delays in payments create challenges for MSEDCL in managing its operations.

Although MSEDCL usually refrains from taking strict action against government institutions, including cutting off electricity supply, in extreme cases, the utility provider may resort to such measures. A spokesperson for MSEDCL emphasized the importance of timely payments from government institutions and stated that while notices have been served in the past, action will be taken if dues remain unpaid despite warnings.
