Hey Pune, it’s time to pay attention to some important news! The number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra has spiked to 101, with 16 patients currently on ventilators. Pune district seems to be the most affected, with 62 cases reported from rural areas, 19 within PMC limits, and 14 under PCMC.
The Health Department is not taking this lightly, as they have already surveyed over 25,000 houses in affected areas. PMC teams have been busy inspecting homes, while PCMC and rural regions have also been covered. Rapid response teams have been formed to keep a close eye on the situation.
Stool and blood samples from affected individuals are being analyzed at the National Institute of Virology, with early results showing infections caused by Campylobacter jejuni and norovirus. Water samples from various parts of Pune are also being tested for any chemical or biological contaminants.
Treatment costs for GBS patients can range from ₹5 to ₹10 lakh, and in some cases, it exceeds ₹10 lakh, making it unaffordable for many families. While government schemes provide free treatment up to ₹2 lakh, the additional expenses are becoming a burden for families.
To help out economically weaker patients, the Pune Municipal Corporation has announced financial assistance to bridge the gap between actual treatment costs and government scheme coverage. The Health Department is working hard to control the spread of the disease, urging residents to follow health advisories and take preventive measures.
Stay safe, Pune, and let’s all do our part to combat GBS!
