Hey there Pune folks, it looks like we’ve got some good news on the Guillan-Barré Syndrome (GBS) front! The outbreak that had us all worried since January seems to be on the decline, with only one new case reported in the entire Pune region in the last four days. That’s a big drop from the initial spike in cases, which suggests that we might be getting past the worst of it.

Previously, the Nanded City area in Pune had seen the highest number of GBS cases, but now it seems like the number of new cases is dropping all across the city and the state. Between the 2nd and 5th of March, there was only one new case reported statewide, which is definitely a good sign that things are calming down.

According to the Maharashtra Public Health Department, there have been a total of 223 GBS cases in the state so far, with 195 confirmed diagnoses. Pune still has the highest number of cases, with 45 in the PMC areas, 95 in newly incorporated villages, 33 in PCMC, and 36 in rural Pune. The rest of the state has reported 14 cases in total.

Right now, 29 patients are in intensive care units, with 14 of them on ventilators. Thankfully, 174 patients have already been discharged after successful treatment, but sadly, there have been 11 deaths linked to GBS.

As the number of new cases goes down, the PMC health department is thinking about stopping financial assistance to GBS patients. Currently, eligible patients can get up to Rs 2 Lakh under the urban poor scheme, while others might receive up to Rs 1 Lakh. If the PMC commissioner gives the green light, this financial aid could come to an end.

So let’s keep an eye on the situation and hope that this downward trend continues, Pune! Stay safe and take care of yourselves.
