The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is currently investigating suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) within its jurisdiction. GBS is a rare neurological condition where the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system, leading to symptoms like numbness, weakness, and, in severe cases, paralysis.

The PMC has provided details of the cases, with a total of 24 patients reported. Out of these, 2 patients are on ventilators and 8 are under intensive care. The Health Department has initiated an on-ground survey and sent samples for testing to the National Institute of Virology (NIV).

A Rapid Response Team has been set up to investigate and address the outbreak, comprising senior public health officials, medical experts, and specialists. Dr. Nina Borade, Health Officer of PMC, stated that preventive measures are being implemented to contain the spread of the disease.

GBS symptoms can escalate quickly, with weakness, tingling, difficulty walking, and breathing difficulties being common. Early intervention is crucial for treatment, with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) being an effective option. While the disorder has no known cause, it is often linked to infections or vaccinations.

Stay tuned for updates on the investigation and measures being taken to address the suspected cases of GBS in Pune.
