The long-awaited merger of Pune Cantonment Board and Kirkee Cantonment Board (Khadki) with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) may soon become a reality. A recent high-level meeting involving officials from the Department of Defence, PMC, and both Cantonment Boards discussed seven major issues related to the merger. The outcome of this meeting will be reported to the Department of Defence, and the Central and Maharashtra State Governments will ultimately decide on the merger.

The integration of the Cantonment Boards with local bodies is a decision made at the central level. With Pune City having two cantonments, Pune and Kirkee, merging them with the PMC could lead to significant infrastructure development in the area. However, disagreements over various issues such as land transfer, employee reassignment, and provision of amenities have stalled progress on the merger.

To address these issues, the Department of Defence instructed the Southern Command of the Army to facilitate a coordination meeting to clarify roles and resolve concerns. The meeting included key officials such as PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, Southern Command Joint Director Rajendra Jagtap, and Presidents and Chief Executive Officers of both Cantonment Boards.

The meeting focused on discussing the process for transferring Cantonment Board sites, employee adjustments within the PMC, transfer of roads and communication systems, provision of civil facilities, determination of assets and liabilities, and handover of relevant documents. The report from these discussions will be sent to the Department of Defence in Delhi for further consideration by the Central and Maharashtra State Governments.

Southern Command Joint Director Rajendra Jagtap highlighted the ongoing discussions about the merger and the need for a coordination meeting to address issues and doubts. The findings of the meeting will play a crucial role in the final decision-making process regarding the merger. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
