The Hasbanis Bakhal Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in Pune is gearing up to celebrate its 131st year with a unique twist. This year, the mandal will feature a grand Gajmahal as part of its Ganeshotsav decorations, a structure being crafted by Muslim artist Salman Shaikh. Shaikh, along with a team of 15 students from Abhinav College, is working tirelessly to create the impressive Gajmahal, which spans 40 by 20 feet and rises to a height of 20 feet.

The Hasbanis Bakhal Mandal has a rich history, having been established in 1894 during the freedom movement. It was formed in Shaniwar Peth, a significant gathering place during the independence struggle. The mandal was inspired by the efforts of Mamasaheb Hasbanis, with the first Ganeshotsav being organised by Laxmanrao Jawle and Lokmanya Tilak.

Ranjit Dhage Patil, the president of the Hasbanis Bakhal Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, highlighted the inclusive nature of the festival. He stated, “Ganeshotsav is a celebration for everyone in society. Muslim devotees of Ganesha also participate in the festival and contribute their services. Lokmanya Tilak initiated Ganeshotsav to unite the community, and in keeping with that ideology, Hasbanis Bakhal Mandal continues to uphold its distinct identity in Pune’s Ganeshotsav.”
