Pune is known for its vibrant nightlife with hundreds of pubs and discotheques in the city and its surroundings. However, a recent RTI query has revealed that most of these establishments do not have the necessary permissions from the police authorities. Only 23 pubs and discotheques have been issued the required permissions, and one of them has even had its permission cancelled.
In response to the RTI query filed by Adv Sameer Shaikh, the Pune Police provided a list of the 23 authorised pubs and discotheques. Shaikh has called for stringent efforts to monitor these establishments to ensure public safety and prevent any future incidents. He has demanded the permanent closure of illegal businesses and urged that no new permissions be issued to such establishments.
While the police have taken some positive steps, such as mandating the closure of pubs, bars, and restaurants before 1.30 am and conducting breathalyzer tests for drunk driving, Shaikh believes that continuous action is necessary. The authorities must ensure compliance with the law and prevent these establishments from reopening in the future.
Shaikh’s press release also highlighted the recent hit-and-run incident in Kalyani Nagar, which exposed how some pub owners were violating the rules. He criticized the government agencies for failing to take timely action against these establishments. The release emphasized that while small vendors and hawkers need permission to operate, swanky bars and pubs are running without consequences.
The list of legal pubs in the police record includes popular establishments such as High Spirits Cafe, Club In JW Marriot, and Elephant and Co. These authorised businesses are among the few that have the necessary permissions to operate in Pune.
As the city continues to crack down on illegal establishments, it is evident that more actions are needed to ensure public safety and maintain law and order in Pune. The government must show its commitment to the security of its citizens by monitoring these establishments and taking strict action against those who violate the rules.
