Pune is gearing up for some serious rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city. Dr. Medha Khole, the head of IMD’s weather forecasting division, shared that a red alert has been issued for the western Pune district ghat regions near Konkan, with expectations of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm in just 24 hours. The plains are also expected to receive moderate to heavy showers.

Dr. Khole highlighted the importance of monitoring reservoir discharge levels as they are closely linked to flood risks. She explained that if the reservoirs reach full capacity, water must be released into rivers, potentially causing flooding in low-lying areas. The Irrigation Department will determine the discharge volume based on the rainfall and dam levels. In fact, Shivajinagar already recorded 28.3 mm of rainfall from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM on Sunday.

The dam storage levels have seen significant increases due to the rainfall. For example, Temghar’s storage jumped from 48.61% to 100%, Varasgaon’s from 53.40% to 92.82%, and Panshet’s from 68.12% to 93%. The total rainfall from June 1 to July 24 has also risen across various dams: Temghar from 1,704 mm to 2,624 mm, Varasgaon from 988 mm to 1,681 mm, and Panshet from 988 mm to 1,662 mm.

Responding to concerns about the flood situation, it was confirmed that a red alert remains in place. Both the district administration and Pune Municipal Corporation teams are on high alert to address any flood-related challenges. With Khadakwasla recording 76 mm of rainfall, the Army’s swift intervention is urgently needed to provide relief and support for flood management efforts in Pune.

Stay safe and stay informed as Pune braces itself for potentially heavy rainfall and flooding in the coming days.
