Khadki was rocked by a massive explosion last week at the Ammunition Factory Khadki (AFK), prompting an internal investigation into the improper disposal of ammunition. The blast, caused by grenades and other ordnance, resulted in significant damage to the disposal site, with debris flying several hundred meters away.
Insiders at the factory revealed that the explosion could have been much worse, as it happened dangerously close to high-explosive storage facilities, other defense units, and residential areas within the factory compound. The incident was allegedly caused by the improper disposal of a large quantity of high-explosive ammunition at a site not meant for such disposal, leading to a blast that sent shockwaves through the surrounding areas.
Residents in the AFK quarters were left terrified by the loud explosion, with many fearing a major accident had occurred. The fire brigades of the Khadki Cantonment Board, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) were called in to help contain the fire that erupted after the blast.
A senior fire officer who responded to the scene described the chaotic situation, with unexploded grenades found near the structures where the ammunition had been stored. Luckily, there were no casualties reported, but the incident has once again raised concerns about safety practices at AFK, following a deadly explosion at the Ordnance Factory in Bhandara in January.
Factory officials stressed that safety is always a top priority when handling explosives, but admitted that there were lapses in the disposal process this time. Workers are required to follow strict protocols for disposing of defective or surplus ammunition, and any deviation from these protocols can have serious consequences. An investigation is underway to determine what went wrong and who is responsible for the incident.
