Yesterday in Pune, a controversial statement made by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi sparked outrage among leaders of the ruling Mahayuti government. Azmi referred to Mughal ruler Aurangzeb as a “good administrator,” leading to calls for legal action against him.
But the drama didn’t stop there. In Indapur, a man named Akram Rashid Qureshi was arrested and charged for keeping a photo of Aurangzeb on his WhatsApp status. The BJP city president Kiran Ganbote filed a complaint against Qureshi, claiming that the photo could incite communal tension.
Qureshi had posted the photo with the caption “Wafat-i-Hazrat Aurangzeb Alamgir R.A.” on March 2, leading to swift action by the police. Within hours, Qureshi was arrested and a case was registered against him.
To prevent any further disturbances, Police Inspector Suryakant Kokane increased security in the area, particularly around dargahs, mosques, and temples. Faujdar Dattatray Lendve is continuing the investigation into the case.
The incident has once again highlighted the delicate balance of communal harmony in Pune and the need for responsible social media usage.
