In a surprising turn of events, independent candidate Sharad Sonawane emerged victorious in Junnar by a margin of 6,664 votes, defeating both Atul Benke from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Satyashil Sherkar from NCP – Sharad Pawar (NCP-SP). The race was initially expected to be a battle between the two NCP candidates, but Sonawane managed to defy all odds and secure the win.

Political experts had predicted that anti-incumbency sentiments against Benke would work in Sherkar’s favor, but it was ultimately Sonawane who captured the voters’ attention. One of the key issues in Junnar was the growing leopard menace, with attacks on the rise and innocent lives at risk. Benke faced criticism for not adequately addressing this issue, while Sonawane made it a central part of his campaign, resonating with the voters and ultimately leading to his victory.

With a total of 3.20 lakh voters in the constituency, the voter turnout was a significant 68.44%, which played a crucial role in Sonawane’s win. The high turnout indicated a strong level of engagement from the voters and ultimately helped Sonawane secure the seat in Junnar.
