Hey there, flower enthusiasts! It looks like Indian rose growers are having a busy season with Valentine’s Day just around the corner. Not only that, but there are a ton of weddings happening between February 2 and 25, driving up the demand for those beautiful blooms.

While things are looking rosy on the home front, it seems like Indian rose exports are facing some hurdles. According to Praveen Sharma, President of the Indian Society of Floriculture Professionals, exports have taken a hit, dropping by 25% between January and November 2024 compared to the previous year. However, there’s hope that a surge in February exports could help lessen the decline to around 10-12%.

It seems like many growers are opting to focus on the domestic market due to challenges in exporting, like high freight rates and limited infrastructure. With most farms operating independently on small scales, it’s tough to compete globally.

Despite these challenges, Sharma believes that with the right support, India could really make a mark in the global floriculture market. In 2023, India’s rose exports were valued at ₹54 crore, with Malaysia being the top importer. Other countries like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Israel also enjoy Indian roses, albeit in smaller quantities.

For now, it looks like Indian rose growers are content with catering to the local demand and reaping the benefits of the wedding and Valentine’s season. Who knows, with some policy changes, India could soon be a major player in the global flower market. Here’s to a blooming future!
