Hey there, stargazers and science enthusiasts! Exciting news is coming out of Pune, as the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is making major strides in astronomical research.

IUCAA, located on the grounds of Savitribai Phule Pune University, is expanding with the construction of the ‘Academic and Research Building – IUCAA II.’ This new facility, set to be completed by 2025, will cost an estimated Rs 30 crore and will house cutting-edge amenities for various projects.

One of the highlights of this expansion is the specialized underground laboratory being built for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project. This lab will include crucial spaces such as an optics lab, clean room, and radio physics lab, all designed to enhance astronomical observations.

Additionally, IUCAA is gearing up to analyze data from the Astrosat satellite with a new modern lab. This data analysis will be crucial for ongoing research efforts, as mentioned by IUCAA Director Dr. Raghunathan Srianand.

With the expansion, IUCAA is seeing a significant increase in faculty, staff, and students, with the new building set to accommodate laboratories and classrooms for all. The goal is to ensure that essential research facilities are in place for the next few decades.

IUCAA is also placing a strong emphasis on training skilled manpower for these large-scale projects. MSc students will have the opportunity to conduct experiments, and a researcher training program will be introduced to further develop skills.

Exciting features of IUCAA 2.0 include the creation of laboratories for major projects, a 200-seat auditorium, modernization of the science park, and special arrangements for research visitors. Stay tuned for more updates on this astronomical journey!
