Legal battles and encroachment issues have come to a head in Pune, as a historic property allocated to a refugee family post-Partition is at the center of a dispute. The two-and-a-half-acre property, known as ‘Mobos Compound’ near the Charity Commissioner’s office, has been the subject of controversy involving builder Basant Kumar Kapurchand Jain and others.

The property, which includes a 150-year-old British bungalow and former government offices, has been embroiled in a legal tussle since its allocation to Kanhaiyalal Bijlani’s family. Initially under the ownership of Basant Kumar Jain through power of attorney, the property came into question when Bijlani’s nephew revoked the power of attorney, leading to a case filed at Koregaon Park Police Station.

After orders from the High Court to maintain status quo and temporary possession granted to the Pune City Tehsildar, encroachments on the property continued to grow. Despite opposition, the Supreme Court upheld the decision to clear the encroachments, resulting in a major operation on Thursday.

With the assistance of JCBs, trucks, police vehicles, and municipal resources, around 30 houses and nearly 100 shops were demolished throughout the day. The operation also included the immediate removal of debris and the planned installation of a perimeter fence.

Authorities, including Senior Police Inspector Ashwini Satpute and Sub-Divisional Officer Sneha Devkate, ensured that the High Court’s directive was carried out diligently. Approximately 200 police personnel, along with senior officers and municipal officials, were involved in the operation to restore the property’s legal status amidst ongoing legal proceedings.
