The LGBTQIA2S+ community mourns the loss of Sarang Punekar, a trailblazing transgender activist and student at Savitribai Phule Pune University. Sarang, who was known for her academic achievements and social work, tragically took her own life in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Her last rites were performed in Pune today, leaving many in shock and disbelief.
Sarang’s presence at SPPU was described as a unique experience by Dr. Anagha Tambe, head of the Women’s Studies Centre, who praised her sharp analysis of caste and power dynamics. Despite her academic success, Sarang’s passion lay in supporting marginalized communities during the COVID-19 lockdown, making a significant impact in Pune.
As a vocal supporter of the Ambedkar movement, Sarang was actively involved in advocating against the NRC and CAA. She worked with Samyak, an NGO focusing on marginalized women and gender issues in North Maharashtra, where she broke stereotypes by championing abortion rights instead of traditional HIV prevention programs.
Sarang’s move to Rajasthan in 2020 was a result of completing a project that required collaboration with government officials, doctors, and NGOs. She continued her advocacy work in Jaipur, fighting for the rights of the transgender community until her untimely death.
During her funeral, attended by Shiv Sena spokesperson Sushma Andhare, it was noted that society failed to support Sarang’s dreams and aspirations. Her legacy as an enthusiastic speaker and advocate for gender rights will live on, inspiring others to continue the fight for equality and justice.
